Minutes for January 18, 2007

Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Cassie O’Quinn, Sharon Shaver, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.

Visitors Present: Twanda Stanley, Rebecca Stanley, and Larry Stanley.

Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on January 18, 2007.

Martha Short reported on the November/December dinner meeting which was held on November 30, 2006 at the Breaks Interstate Park.

 

Old Business

Descendant Project – Kimberly Short reported that she is still participating in this national project to digitize old DAR applications. Donna Adkins requested more information on participating in this program.

Registrar’s Report – Martha Short reported that she had completed the forms for her supplemental ancestor, William Freeman, and should have the papers ready for signing at the next meeting. Peggy Keen reported that Tara Maggard was also in the process of submitting papers on a supplemental ancestor. Shirley Kaminsky’s papers have been approved. Shirley’s daughter has requested to join the Chapter as an out of state member. There was no opposition to her joining.

Fundraisers -- The Chapter discussed various fundraisers including: a raffle project for the 4 th of July (birdhouse, americana-themed basket, quilt, etc.), cookbook with family recipes and stories, and Christmas ornament. Glenda Short was nominated to chair a fundraising committee.

Cemetery Project – Members were encouraged to continue surveying cemeteries and submitting information to Gayle Stanley for inclusion on the Chapter’s website.

Website – Gayle Stanley has agreed to continue to serve as webmaster for the Chapter’s webpage.

Good Citizenship Award – The Chapter wants to award a good citizenship plaque to a high school senior from each county high school. Donna Adkins is coordinating this project.

 

New Business

Indian Minute – Cassie O’Quinn was nominated to provide an Indian Minute reading for each meeting.

Defense Report – Sharon Shaver was nominated to provide a defense report for each meeting.

Regent’s Report – Peggy Keen reported that with her election as a district officer she would no longer be able to serve as Regent, however, she would be willing to serve as Vice-Regent and Corresponding Secretary.

Minutes for February, 2007

Members Present: Peggy Keen, Sharon Shaver, Cynthia Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.

Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on February 22, 2007.

Martha Short presented the minutes from January 18, 2007. The minutes were approved unanimously.

 

Old Business

Selection of Officers – No new officer nominations were presented from the floor so the slate of officers presented at the January 18, 2007 meeting was approved by acclamation. Newly elected officers who will assume office in June include:

2 nd Vice Regent – Donna Adkins

Chaplain – Donna Adkins

Registrar’s Report – Supplemental ancestor forms were submitted for William Freeman by Kimberly Short, Martha Short, Cynthia Short, and Sharon Shaver and for Charles C. Barker for Tara Maggard.

Fundraisers -- The Chapter discussed selling collectible ornaments. Members are to bring mock-ups of suggested ornaments to the March meeting.

 

New Business

Obituary Project – Peggy Keen suggested that a member start collecting local obituaries for submittal to the National DAR Library. Kimberly Short volunteered to check into the feasibility of doing this.

Future meeting dates include: March 22 nd and April 19 th.

Minutes for March, 2007

 

Members Present: Cassie O’Quinn, Sharon Shaver, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.

The Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met at 6:00 P.M. on March 22, 2007.

Martha Short presented the minutes from February 22, 2007. The minutes were approved unanimously.

 

Old Business

Fundraisers -- The Chapter discussed selling collectible ornaments. Members felt that the initial investment in the ornaments was too great for the group at this time so this fundraiser was tabled until the group’s resources could be increased. The Chapter discussed selling “Rada” knives. Kimberly Short volunteered to research this fundraising option.

 

New Business

None.

Future meeting dates include: April 19 th and May 17 th.

There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 6:45 P.M.

Minutes for April, 2007

Peggy C. Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met at 6:00 P.M. on April 19, 2007.

 

Old Business

Fundraisers – Kimberly Short reported on the Rada Knife Products fundraising opportunities. Sharon Shaver made a motion to order booklets and distribute them to members for raising funds. Cassie O’Quinn seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Sharon Shaver made a motion to give the quilt donated by Glenda and Kimberly Short away during the July 4 th activities. Tickets will be $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00. The motion was seconded by Cassie O’Quinn. The motion passed unanimously.

New Officers will be installed at the next meeting. Kimberly Short is to be in charge of refreshments.

 

New Business

District Meeting – The District Meeting will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 in Norton, Virginia. The Sandy Basin Chapter will be in charge of the registration table.

Fall Muster – The Fall Muster will be held on Friday, September 21, 2007 in Bristol, Virginia.

Meeting Time – Next month’s meeting will start at 6:30 P.M.

Minutes for May, 2007

Martha Short presented the minutes from April 19, 2007. The minutes were approved unanimously.

 

Old Business

Fundraisers – Kimberly Short reported that the Rada Knife Products fundraising project was going well. Glenda Short was reimbursed $270.15 for the initial knife order. The group voted to order extra knives to set out for sale over the 4 th of July holiday. Glenda Short and Kimberly Short presented a quilt which they donated to the Chapter for a 4 th of July raffle.

District Meeting – The District Meeting will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 in Norton, Virginia. The Sandy Basin Chapter will be in charge of the registration table.

4 th of July – The Chapter voted to have an informational booth at the genealogy bookfair and to not participate in the parade this year.

 

New Business

Celebration -- Peggy Keen provided information on the 2 nd Anniversary Celebration of a Tribute to Patriots and Pathfinders to be held on June 9, 2007 at 10:00 A.M. at the Natural Tunnel State Park. Peggy will attend and present a wreath in honor of Mrs. Hetty Swindall Sutherland in recognition of the invaluable contribution she made to the preservation of local history and genealogy.

Genealogy Workshop – The Chapter voted to hold a genealogy workshop to help raise interest and awareness of the DAR in the local area. A tentative date of July 7, 2007 at 10:00 AM was set. Donna Adkins is to check on the availability of the fire hall on this date.

Installation of Officers – New officers were installed.

Future meeting dates include: June 28.

Minutes for June, 2007

 

Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Cassie O’Quinn, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.

Kimberly Short, Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met at 6:00 P.M.

Martha Short presented the minutes from May 17, 2007. The minutes were approved unanimously.

 

Old Business

Fundraisers –The Rada Knife Products fundraising project is ongoing as are quilt ticket sales for the quilt to be given away on July 4 th. Martha Short made a motion to reimburse Glenda Short for the advance for the knife sales. Cynthia Short seconded the motion. The motion was unanimous.

 

District Meeting – The District IV Meeting will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2007 in Norton, Virginia. The Sandy Basin Chapter will be in charge of the registration table.

 

Fall Muster – The Fall Muster will be held in Bristol on September 21, 2007.

 

Genealogy Workshop – The group voted to postpone the genealogy workshop tentatively scheduled for July 7 th. The group will discuss alternative dates at the July meeting.

 

4 th of July – The group voted to not participate in the parade or have an informational booth at the genealogy book fair due to not having enough people to man the table.

 

New Business

Kimberly Short reported that she and Sharon Shaver are planning to attend the DAR meeting in Lynchburg on July 21, 2007. Attendance at this meeting and at the District IV meeting and Fall Muster is required for the Chapter to qualify for DAR Honor Roll.

Future meeting dates include: July 26 th.
