Minutes for January 26, 2006
Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Sandra Salyer, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, Martha Short, and Gayle Stanley.
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:30 P.M. on January 26, 2006.
Ms. Keen discussed the Chapter Achievement Award criteria and solicited input from the members on activities that the group had undertaken over the last year.
Kimberly Short volunteered to collect Campbell’s soup can labels and send them to designated schools to receive Chapter points. Ms. Short also reminded the group to save stamps for the Veteran’s group.
The group discussed future programs and Sandra Salyer agreed to do a program on the Yorktown Custom House, Kimberly Short agreed to do a program on the W3R route, and Donna Adkins agreed to do a program on osteoporosis.
Kimberly Short agreed to contact The Dickenson Star to see if a reporter could attend the February meeting.
The Chapter agreed to move meetings to the third Thursday instead of the fourth Thursday unless otherwise noted.
Future meeting dates include: February 16 th, March 23 rd, and April 20th.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.

Minutes for February 16, 2006
Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Sharon Shaver, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.
Invited Guest: Teresa Mullins from the Dickenson Star
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:30 P.M. on February 16, 2006.
Peggy Keen presented a Fuller family history book to the Jonnie B. Deel Public Library and to the Haysi Library.
Martha Short read the minutes of January 26, 2006. Glenda Short made a motion to accept the minutes as read. Donna Adkins seconded the motion. The motion was unanimous.
Kimberly Short noted that Annette Smith’s papers have been approved, however, she has not received her membership number yet.
The group discussed an American Flag quilt donated by Sandra Salyer for a 4 th of July fundraiser. The group decided to sell the chances at a $1.00 per ticket or six tickets for $5.00. Kimberly Short and Glenda Short volunteered to print the tickets for the quilt for the March meeting.
The group discussed the proposed throw fundraiser and decided to table the project, however, the group is to continue gathering photos for inclusion on the throw. It was suggested that the group run an ad in the Dickenson Star requesting photographs to be used in this project.
New Business
Donna Adkins gave a brief program on osteoporosis.
Peggy Keen is in process of printing the yearbook.
Prospective programs include: American and Virginia State Flag information, Dickenson County History, Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R), Lewis and Clark, Yorktown Custom House, a review of the book 1776, descendants of Jamestown DNA Project, Pocahantas, and brief biographies of our Revolutionary ancestors.
4 th of July activities: The group decided to participate in the annual Town of Clintwood 4 th of July parade in dress costumes. The group is considering having a booth that would display DAR information and have some items for sale. Sharon Shaver suggested having 18 th century games for children – perhaps a joint project with the CRA.
Future meetings will begin at 6:00 P.M. rather than 6:30 P.M.
Future meeting dates include: March 23 rd, April 20 th, and May 18 th.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.

Minutes for March 23, 2006
Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Sandra Salyer, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, Martha Short, and Joyce Wallace.
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on March 23, 2006.
Martha Short read the minutes of February 16, 2006. Peggy Keen noted that the Children of the American Revolution should be abbreviated as CAR rather than CRA. Kimberly Short made a motion to accept the minutes as amended. Sandra Salyer seconded the motion. The motion was unanimous.
Kimberly Short noted that Annette Smith’s and Shirley Kaminsky’s papers have been approved.
Kimberly Short and Glenda Short brought the printed tickets for the American quilt raffle and distributed them to members.
Old Business
4 th of July activities: The group discussed ordering patriotic-themed fans for sale at the 4 th of July stand. Kimberly Short is to check on printing costs. Peggy Keen reported that she was unable to purchase genealogy charts for sale.
New Business
Kimberly Short gave a brief program on the Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route (W3R).
Sandra Salyer made a motion to submit the name of Peggy Keen as a candidate for the District IV office of Treasurer or the office of Secretary/Treasurer, if the two offices are combined. Gayle Stanley seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. The Chapter directed Martha Short to write a letter to the nominating committee consisting of Bettie Byrd St. Clair, Joyce Ferratt, and Geraldine McCall.
Peggy Keen announced that this will be her last year as Regent.
Peggy Keen presented Chapter awards from the State meeting. Cynthia Short was directed to archive the awards in the Chapter scrapbook.
Sandra Salyer will present a program at the next meeting on the American flag.
Future meeting dates include: April 20 th, and May 18 th.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.

Minutes for April 19, 2006
Members Present: Peggy Keen, Sandra Salyer, Cynthia Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on April 19, 2006.
Old Business
By-Laws – Peggy Keen pointed out that the Chapter by-laws would have to be updated to reflect changes in the National By-Laws.
4 th of July activities -- The group discussed ordering patriotic-themed fans and flag pins for sale at the 4 th of July stand. Peggy Keen stated that she was working on a banner flag for the parade.
New Business
Fundraising – Sandra Salyer reported that Tupperware had a fundraising program for organizations. The group continues to sale tickets for a flag-themed quilt raffle. The quilt will be raffled off on July 4 th.
Officer Notebooks – Peggy Keen reported that she was beginning Officer Notebooks to pass along information to future officeholders.
Chapter Shirts – Martha Short brought up the subject of ordering organization shirts to increase the organization’s visibility in the community. The group discussed ordering t-shirts and/or polo shirts. Sandra Salyer and Martha Short were to check on prices and report back to the group.
Future meeting dates include: May 18 th, June 15 th, and July 20 th.

Minutes for May 18, 2006
Members Present: Donna Adkins, Margaret Childress, Peggy Keen, Sandra Salyer, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, Martha Short, and Gayle Stanley.
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on May 18, 2006.
Kimberly Short made a motion to accept the March and April minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously.
Old Business
Fundraiser – Quilt tickets for the 4 th of July raffle are going well. To date, $61 has been turned in.
By-Laws – Glenda Short made a motion to adopt the by-laws as amended. The motion passed unanimously.
4 th of July activities -- The Chapter decided to walk in the Veteran’s Parade in colonial dress. The quilt raffle will be announced by a member at the stadium before the fireworks on July 4 th – note that the winner does not need to be present to win. Due to the limited number of members available to work on July 4 th, the Chapter decided to not have a booth but to have an informational display and flyers at the genealogy bookfair to be held on the morning of July 4 th. The Chapter discussed the possibility of having a float in the afternoon parade.
Chapter Shirts – The Chapter voted to order both t-shirts and polo shirts. Martha Short is coordinating t-shirt orders and Sandra Salyer is coordinating polo shirt orders. Orders must be placed by May 25 th so that they can be in by July 4 th.
New Business
Regent’s Report – Peggy Keen reported that the place of the meeting should not be posted in the minutes or on-line due to national concerns over meeting safety. Ms. Keen reported that the Boone Trail Chapter in Wise, Virginia would be hosting the annual Flag Day Ceremony on Saturday, June 10, 2006 at 11:00 A.M. at Moseby’s Restaurant. Ms. Keen is unable to attend so Donna Adkins and Kimberly Short volunteered to go. The invitation is to be placed in the Chapter scrapbook. Ms. Keen again expressed concern over the lack of new local members and stated that the Chapter needed a membership drive. She suggested that we work harder to get the schoolteachers involved in the Chapter. Donna Adkins suggested that the Chapter revisit the idea of a genealogy workshop to increase awareness of the group. Gayle Stanley suggested that the Chapter pursue Phipps Foundation money to sponsor a genealogy workshop.
Social Functions – Gayle Stanley volunteered to coordinate future social gatherings of members.
Future meeting dates include: June 15 th and July 20 th.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.

Minutes for August 17, 2006
Members Present: Donna Adkins, Peggy Keen, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:00 P.M. on August 17, 2006.
Cynthia Short made a motion to accept the June minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously.
Old Business
Fundraiser – The 4 th of July quilt raffle raised approximately $361.
4 th of July activities -- The Chapter walked in the Veteran’s Parade in colonial dress. Peggy Keen gave a brief speech on “Revolutionary” John Mullins and the importance and sacrifices of all of our Revolutionary ancestors. The Chapter had a float in the afternoon parade. The theme of the float was “The Bell of Freedom, the Sound of Patriotism.” The quilt was won by Martha Short.
Social Outing – the tour of the Stone House scheduled for August 19, 2006 has been postponed.
New Business
Regent’s Report – Peggy Keen reported that the Fall Muster would be held on September 19, 2006 in Roanoke, Virginia. She stated that the new handbooks were available for $7.00 each. Peggy is to pick up information on the school essay contest at the Fall Muster. National, State and Chapter dues of $59.00 each are now due.
Future meeting dates include: September 21 st, October 19 th, and November 30 th.
There being no further business to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:45 P.M.
