Members Present: Margaret Childress,
Peggy Keen, Sandra Salyer, Cynthia Short, Kimberly
Short, and Martha Short.
Visitors Present: Cassie Oquin
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing
Regent, opened the meeting with the DAR Ritual
at 6:30 P.M.
Sandra Salyer served as Chaplin, Cynthia Short
led the Pledge of Allegiance, and Martha Short
led the American’s Creed.
Martha Short, Recording Secretary,
presented the minutes from April 28, 2005. Since
there was not a quorum present; no action was
taken on the minutes.
Old Business
1. FLAG DISPOSAL CEREMONY
a. Margaret Childress reported that Gayle Stanley had
spoken with Ronnie Robbins regarding a flag disposal
ceremony. Mr. Robbins stated that his Veteran’s
group would do a demonstration of disposal for the
group but not the public.
b. Sandra Salyer reported that she had spoken with
Kevin Mullins who is active with the Boy Scouts and
said that that group would also do a private ceremony
but would not do a public ceremony although flags could
be collected from the public for private disposal.
c. The group tabled this discussion until the next
meeting where it will consider pursuing a ceremony
in July.
2. FOURTH OF
JULY CELEBRATION
a. No information was available on the Town of Clintwood
Fourth of July Parade.
3. CEMETERY
SERVICE PROJECT
a. Members are to turn in their cemetery listing to
Gayle Stanley by July 1, 2005.
4. PROGRAMS
a. Peggy Keen suggested a program on “Gravedowsing” i.e.
using the principals of waterwitching in searching
for unmarked graves.
b. Martha Short suggested having the library staff
explain the Heritage Quest program to which the library
recently subscribed.
5. MEMBERSHIP
APPLICATIONS
a. Kimberly Short stated that membership papers from
prospective members are needed by mid-July to get them
approved for Charter Member status.
New Business
1. DAR CITIZENSHIP AWARDS
a. Peggy Keen reported that two students had been selected
to receive the Chapter’s DAR Citizenship award:
Emily Yates and Jared Owens.
b. Information on next year’s Citizenship Essay
Contest will be distributed in September. Sandra Salyer
volunteered to coordinate distributing this information
to the schools.
2. REGENT’S
REPORT
a. The September District Meeting will be held on September
13, 2005 at the Martha Washington Inn in Abingdon,
Virginia.
b. The Regent’s Club Service Project in District
IV was a brochure on the region’s history which
could be used for both educational and promotional
purposes.
c. The Levisa River Chapter will install new officers
on May 27, 2005.
3. NATIONAL
DEFENSE READING
a. Sandra Salyer provided a reading from the National
Defender about the DAR insignia.
b. The State DAR has iss
ued a challenge for each chapter
to have at least 10 members subscribe to the National
Defender. Peggy Keen is to provide subscription information
to members.
Future meeting dates include: June
23 and July 28th.
There being no further business
to discuss, the meeting was adjourned at 7:35
P.M.

Joyce Wallace made
a motion to accept
the minutes as
presented. Sandra
Salyer seconded
the motion, which
was passed unanimously.

Report.
Old Business
1. CEMETERY SERVICE
PROJECT
a. Members are
to continue working
on documenting
cemeteries and
submit for inclusion
on the webpage.
2. CHAPTER WEBPAGE
a. Peggy Keen reported
that the webpage
had been submitted
to the State Regent
for approval. If
she does not hear
from her in a couple
of weeks, Ms. Keen
will call her to
check on the progress
of the review.
b. The cost of
the webpage is
$9.95 per month.
Members suggested
that each person
contribute $10
per year to help
pay for the cost
of hosting the
webpage.
3. BY-LAWS
a. The members
discussed the by-laws
and proposed changes.
Martha Short made
a motion to accept
the by-laws as
amended. Margaret
Childress seconded
the motion. The
by-laws, as amended,
were approved unanimously.
4. NEW MEMBERS
a. Registrar Kimberly
Short reported
that the applications
for Cassie Oquin
and Judy Osborne
had been submitted.
She said that Annette
Smith was also
working on an application.
Peggy Keen reported
that her cousin
Candice was also
interested in joining
the Sandy Basin
DAR.
5. PROGRAMS
a. Joyce Wallace
is to coordinate
a program to be
held on Saturday
or Sunday in the
fall with Buford
Caudill on gravedowsing.
b. The members
are to prepare
a list of programs
or other fun activities
that they would
like to see in
the future and
discuss at the
next meeting.
c. Peggy Keen suggested
that members research
their ancestors
and give a short
presentation at
future meetings.
d. Sharon Shaver
suggested that
the group sponsor
an event with the
local Children
of the American
Revolution to focus
on the games that
children played
in the 18th century.
e. It was suggested
that the group
plan a trip to
the Barter Theater
should an interesting
program be scheduled.
New Business
1. DUES
a. National Dues
are $30.00, State
dues are $8 to
$12, and Chapter
dues are $15.
b. Joyce Wallace
is to send a notice
on dues and is
to include a statement
on the proper way
to withdraw from
the DAR to remain
in good standing
with the organization.
2. MEMBERSHIP
a. Peggy Keen stated
that the group
needs to increase
its visibility
with the local
press.
b. The members
discussed various
programs to raise
interest in the
Chapter including:
i. Genealogy Workshop – Donna
Adkins asked about
the status of the
genealogy workshop
which was discussed
last year. Peggy
Keen reported that
the schedule of
the presenters
could not be worked
out with the dates
available at that
time.
ii. The members
discussed inviting
a friend to attend
a future meeting
to introduce the
friend to the Chapter.
3. CHRISTMAS MEETING
a. The group decided
to hold a Christmas
meeting on December
1, 2005 at the
Breaks Interstate
Park in lieu of
holding regular
meetings in November
and December.
b. Kimberly Short
suggested that
the group once
again have an ornament
exchange at the
Christmas meeting.
4. REGENT’S
REPORT
a. Peggy Keen reported
that there were
four required programs
that the Chapter
was supposed to
complete each year
on the following
subjects: Conservation,
History, Preservation
and the Flag.
b. Peggy Keen suggested
that the members
think of different
meeting places
that would allow
the group to hold
meetings for 2-3
hours so that both
programs and business
could be discussed.
i. Group members
suggested the following
places: Courthouse,
Fire Hall, Valentino’s
Restaurant, Schools,
and Church Fellowship
Halls.
ii. Group members
also suggested
holding split meetings
using one to discuss
business and another
meeting to discuss
programs.
c. The September
District Meeting
will be held on
September 13, 2005
at the Martha Washington
Inn in Abingdon,
Virginia.
d. Peggy Keen stated
that she would
re-send the web
address of the
DAR member only
webpage so that
members could review
the types programs
which are required
by DAR.

Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 6:45 P.M on August 25, 2005.
Martha Short, Recording Secretary, presented the minutes from July 28, 2005. Kimberly Short made a motion to accept the minutes as presented. The motion passed unanimously.
Joyce Wallace presented the Treasurer’s Report.
Old Business
- MEMBERSHIP
- Registrar Kimberly Short reported that she had not heard anything further on the papers of Cassie Oquin and Judy Osborne.
- Registrar Kimberly Short reported that the membership papers for Annette Smith were ready for submittal. Martha Short made a motion that Annette Smith be approved for Chapter membership provided that all documentation for National membership is approved and the application fee is paid. The motion passed unanimously. Donna Adkins made a motion that Kathy Wallace Kaminsky be approved for Chapter membership provided that all documentation for National membership is approved and the application fee is paid.
- MEETING PLACE
- The Chapter will continue to meet at the Jonnie B. Deel Public Library in Clintwood. The Library staff agreed to let the Chapter use the meeting room after the library closes so that the Chapter will have enough time to conduct business, socialize, and have programs.
- PROGRAMS
- Martha Short volunteered to do a program next month on Dickenson County Trivia.
- The members are to prepare a list of programs or other fun activities that they would like to see in the future and discuss at the next meeting.
- DUES
- Chapter dues can be paid tonight or mailed to Joyce Wallace.
- State dues are $4.00 per person.
New Business
- DISTRICT MEETING
- The registration form for all members wishing to attend the September 13, 2005 District IV Meeting in Abingdon, Virginia should be submitted by August 26, 2005.
- DAR License Plate
- Peggy Keen reported that the DAR license plate program is still accepting orders through the Department of Motor Vehicles.
- FUNDRAISING
- Sandra Salyer volunteered to donate an American Flag quilt which could be raffled off to raise money for the Chapter.
- Peggy Keen suggested that the Chapter consider selling coverlets highlighting local buildings and places of interest throughout Dickenson County.
- Sandra Salyer suggested that the Chapter sell cardboard fans during next year’s Fourth of July celebration.
- Peggy Keen suggested that the Chapter sell genealogical charts during next year’s Fourth of July celebration.
- REGENT’S REPORT
- Peggy Keen reported that the members’ only site was available. Suggested contents included: minutes, email links, and yearbook information.
- Members are to send Gayle Stanley the email address, if any, that they would want on the Members Only page.
- Donna Adkins suggested that each member complete a biography for inclusion on the webpage and/or the Chapter archives. Ms. Adkins is to develop questions for the biographies.
- Peggy Keen stated that she would like the Chapter to sponsor a subscription to American Spirit magazine for the Jonnie B. Deel Library. The cost of this subscription is $18.00 per year.
- Peggy Keen stated that she has a series of press releases for the local media on the history of the DAR.
- Kimberly Short volunteered to take the first article to the Dickenson Star and talk to the staff about publication.
Future meeting dates include: September 22nd, October 27th, and December 1st.

Members Present: Peggy Keen, Sharon Shaver, Cynthia Short, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, and Martha Short.
Visitors Present: Annette Smith and Kristin Smith
Peggy C. Fuller Keen, Organizing Regent, opened the regular meeting of the Sandy Basin Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution at 7:00 P.M. on September 22, 2005.
Due to the limited number of members present, the Chapter had an informal discussion of upcoming projects including:
- Commemorative Coverlet – members are to suggest photos for the coverlet and bring photos to the next meeting.
- Media Relations
- Peggy Keen will submit articles to the Dickenson Star for publication on a regular basis.
- A Dickenson Star reporter is interested in attending a future meeting and doing a story on the cemetery project.
- Christmas Tree – Martha Short suggested decorating a patriotic-themed tree in honor of veterans past and present.
In recognition of the Chapter’s one-year anniversary, Glenda Short, Kimberly Short, Martha Short and Cynthia Short provided cake and punch.
Future meeting dates include: October 27 th and December 1 st.
